Anna Pirozzi returns to the Bavarian State Opera as Turandot by Giacomo Puccini. The libretto of Puccini’s opera is based, very freely, on Andrea Maffei’s translation of Friedrich Schiller’s German adaptation of Gozzi’s work. The idea for the opera came to the composer following a meeting with librettists Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni, which took place in Milan in March 1920. In August of the same year, when he was for a spa stay in Bagni di Lucca, the composer was able to listen, thanks to his friend Baron Fassini, who had been for some time Italian consul in China, a carillon with musical themes from that country. Some of these themes are present in the final draft of the score.
