Anna Pirozzi is Tosca at the Teatro dell‘Opera di Roma. Rome 1800. Angelotti, consul of the former Roman Republic, has escaped from Castel Sant’Angelo and takes refuge in the church of Sant’Andrea della Valle, where his sister the Marchesa Attavanti has hidden some women’s clothes that will allow him to go unnoticed. The woman was portrayed without knowing it by the painter Marcio Cavaradossi. He notices Angelotti, whom he has known for some time, who reveals his situation to him. Suddenly they are interrupted by the arrival of Tosca, who, recognizing the features of the marquise in the Maddalena painting, makes a scene of jealousy at Mario, who with difficulty manages to calm her down and send her away. Angelotti comes out of his hiding place and resumes his conversation with Mario who directs him to his villa. Suddenly Scarpia, the head of the police, arrives and strongly suspects Mario. To find Angelotti he tries to involve Tosca by arousing her morbid jealousy. The woman, believing Scarpia’s words, vows to find them. Scarpia has her follow. While Spoletta is having dinner at Palazzo Farnese Scarpia, a henchman brings him Mario who has been arrested. He refuses to reveal where Angelotti is and is led into a room and tortured. Tosca arrives and, exhausted by Mario’s cries, confesses the escapee’s hiding place. Mario, indignant that Tosca spoke, tries to chase her away. Scarpia sentences him to death. Desperate Tosca wants to give herself to Scarpia if he agrees to free Mario. Scarpia summons Spoletta and with a nod of understanding makes Tosca believe that the shooting will be simulated and the rifles loaded with blanks. While he is writing the safe conduct that will take them out of the Papal States, Tosca attacks Scarpia and stabs him. Musical director is Michele Mariotti. Directed by Alessandro Talevi.
