Anna Pirozzi is Turandot at the Bastille Opera at Paris. The cruel Chinese princess Turandot does not want to belong to any man. She asks all the candidates asking for her hand in marriage unsolvable riddles and has them beheaded if they fail in the tasks. Until the one who solves all the riddles comes along… When in the early 1920s Giacomo Puccini decided to transform the ancient oriental fairy tale of Princess Turandot into an opera, he wanted to break away from the proven channels of his previous opera successes and do something new, create new. With the material he was able to leave behind the realism of his previous works and write a piece that achieved the mythical on a grand scale. The foreign aura of the story gave him the opportunity to enrich his composition with completely new colors. However, the project failed just short of the goal: Puccini did not find a credible solution for the end of the opera – for the belated transformation of the icy princess into a lover.
