Anna Pirozzi is TOSCA, at the Teatro Dell’Opera in Rome.
The composition of the opera is particularly troubled, between rethinks and last-minute changes, Tosca by Puccini made its debut on January 14, 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome.
The action takes place in Rome, June 14, 1800, the date of the battle of Marengo. The Roman Republic has fallen and fierce reprisals are underway against former Republicans sympathetic to Napoleon Bonaparte.
A confession by Giuseppe Verdi to his biographer (“There would be a drama that, if I were still in my career, I would musich with all my soul, and it is Tosca”) prompted the publisher Ricordi to try again the path of an agreement for rights of the drama. The first recipient of the commission to compose the opera was Alberto Franchetti, fresh from the recent success of his “Cristoforo Colombo” (1892). A few months after obtaining the job (end of 1893) Franchetti, however, decided to give up the work. Thus it was that Giacomo Puccini took over.
